Royal Tine Big Game Hunting Guide Training and Packer School

Hunting, Fishing &
Camp Cook
School

What You Will Need to Bring

clothes for at least 1 week (include jeans and long sleeve shirts)
long underwear, sweatshirt, and warm jacket
1 set of camouflaged clothing (shirt & pants)
footwear-- boots with riding heel, hiking boots, and camp shoes
leather belt
belt knife
cowboy hat-- Stetson or Resistol are the best
sleeping bag with stuff sack (rated to at least 20 degrees)
rain gear
gloves
toiletries (tooth brush, comb and biodegradable shampoo/soap such as CampSuds™)
towel
alarm clock
flash light with extra batteries
multi-plier (such as a Leatherman)
day pack (small & quiet)
8' X 10' foot camoflaged lightweight poly tarp (available at Walmart)
50 feet of light nylon cord
compass
canteen
elk bugle of your preference
binoculars - I recommend a pair that are water and fog proof, have a magnification of 8-10 power with an objective lens of 35-50mm
notebook (1 large, 1 pocket size)
Erv Malnarich Book
Phone cards (There is a phone at the school and it requires a card for long distance calls. It is not a pay phone, so change won't work)
Pocket money for laundry & shopping

Also, to fish, a non-resident fishing license is needed and can be purchased for $10 per 2 day sticker or $50 for the year. A 2-day fishing license is required as a minimum to participate in instruction during the school. This price is not included in tuition, because the school cannot purchase a fishing license for you.

A note on elk bugles-- I personally prefer a mouth diaphragm such as the Lohman #21 with a good grunt tube. However, any double reed mouth diaphragm will do. There are a number of good external diaphragm calls as well. These are generally easier to learn to use. I feel E.L.K. 's Power Bugle is the best of the externals. I also highly recommend a good cow call. I feel the E. J. Sceery Ace-1 is a good one. Cabelas (1-800-237-4444) sells both E.L.K. and Sceery calls and many of the other items on the list.

OPTIONAL

hatchet
camera & film
handgun & ammo- Most important a hand gun should be light, durable and comfortable to shoot. I suggest a caliber of .357 mag, .41 mag, or .44 mag in stainless steel with a barrel of 4" or 6".
fishing gear
rubber overshoes
GPS- Garmin Etrex or Etrex Summit
rangefinder

As a minimum, you should have all the items on the first list when you come. As you go through the school and on to a job, you will have a much better idea of what you will need and want for further gear. If you do plan on purchasing items and have questions or want recommendations, feel free to email or call.
